Shooting fireworks can definitely be tricky. You may even think you need the best gear to achieve awesome shots. Well I am here to tell you that you don’t! I am proof that you can capture decent firework photos with cheap gear. My gear is old. Over 5 years old to be exact. I only own point and shoot cameras. There are a few ways to capture the shots which I will cover. I hope this article can help those of you wondering how to get better pictures.

First Location. It is important to pick the right place to get a nice view for the shots. Scouting ahead of time is a good idea. Find out what areas are blocked off ahead of time. In the shot above I was somewhat far away from the action because of traffic and areas being blocked off. In the end though I think it made a better shot with the water.
Next prepare your gear. Get to know the modes your camera offers. You can first try the easy method of using Scene mode- fireworks. I haven’t had much success with it. It is possible to shoot with auto mode and flash off if the area has enough light while the fireworks are going off. Does your camera have the letters M, AV, TV, P? It is possible to get shots in all of those modes. I use M for Manual mode most of the time. I do not have a wireless remote which can make things tricky. If your camera offers a remote get it.
In the picture below here are the settings which I used
F 8.0 1/20 sec iso 100 P mode
You can see the difference between both pictures. Settings make all the difference and the type of fireworks going off. Having the most expensive gear doesn’t mean you will get awesome shots. Knowing how to take the photos you want will guarantee you success.
What you need-
Camera
Tripod
Remote
Settings- M mode
F 8.0 or around there
2- 15 second exposure and that will change depending on how the fireworks are being shot

Focus the area you will be shooting with auto focus then switch to manual focus. Also set to infinite
You can change those settings depending on the type of camera you have.
